After facing Complex PTSD over many years and eventually redefining her own path, Laura still observes the silent struggles of others like her and knew a space for support, belonging, and opportunity was desperately needed, so Behind the Badge was born in 2025.

There are three main areas that we focus on.



Financial Strain
Financial stress is one of the most overwhelming and isolating experiences. When you're already stretched emotionally and physically, it can feel like the final straw.
I know that feeling all too well:
In 2017 financially, I was on my knees. By mid-month, my bank balance was empty. I’d find myself counting down the days to payday, hoping nothing would go wrong. But something always did, like clockwork. Car repairs, School club fees. Credit card payments, or Something breaking.
It felt like I was drowning. No breathing room. No backup plan. No idea how to make money other than leaving my family to work overtime.
I was working full-time, pouring everything I had into my job and my family yet financially, we were surviving on a knife’s edge.
The shame that came with it only made the stress worse. I thought, how can I be on a relatively decent wage and still be struggling like this?
Family Pressures
Whether your partner’s in the job or not, or you're doing it alone as a single parent, let’s be real:
The pressure is relentless.
The never-ending plate-spinning. Sorting childcare. Swapping the kids over in the car park of the nick. The endless washing. The guilt.
Missing bedtime again, because you were late off. Cancelled rest days. Court on your only day off. Trying to parent through exhaustion. Holding it all together while quietly falling apart.
You’re constantly juggling, and too often, your family life pays the price.
I know what it’s like to feel like you want to run away, to escape the chaos, even for a moment. But let’s be honest, a holiday will have to do.
Except you can’t get the leave. Or it’s already used up, and even if you could, you’re too drained to enjoy it. That trapped feeling, stuck in the system, the routine, the overwhelm, it’s crushing.
But it doesn’t have to stay that way.
Behind the Badge exists to help you reconnect with what truly matters, to show up for your family without losing yourself in the process.
Mental Load

You’re not alone. I’ve been there:
In 2017, my life was completely out of balance. I was working full-time as a Police Officer, commuting an hour each way. My husband was also working shifts opposite mine, so we had just one day off together each month. Our daughter, who is neurodivergent, needed more support than I felt capable of giving, and I was running on empty.
I felt like I was failing in every area:

Behind the badge, I was broken.
What I didn’t realise back then was that my mind, my mental health needed caring for. I was too busy, too stressed, too exhausted, and too disconnected from myself to see that the constant chaos wasn’t any way to live.
I wanted and deserved more. So do YOU.
